Welcome to the Walks Programmes

The Club organises walks every Sunday and Wednesday throughout the year and occasionally special walks such as on Boxing Day or New Years Day. There is usually a trip to Wales (normally the Brecon Beacons) every second Sunday from February through to November. All Day walks, both Wednesdays and Sundays, will require a picnic lunch. The shorter Wednesday (morning) walks typically end with an optional pub lunch, but will also have a short coffee stop (bring a flask) during the walk.

Car Sharing
Most walks have a designated meeting point in either Highworth or Swindon so that participants can share cars, and costs, in travelling to the start of the walk. There are four meeting points:-

Eucl - Euclid Street, Swindon (On road by the Civic Offices). SN1 2JH SU155846 – Sunday walks, usually meeting at 9:00am.
Brew - Brewery Street Car Park, Brewery Street, Highworth. SN6 7EU SU203924 – Sunday walks, usually meeting at 9:30am.
Fresh - Freshbrook Centre Car Park, Worsley Road, Swindon. SN5 8NU  SU111834 – Welsh walks, usually meeting at 8:00am.
Rec - Recreation Centre Car Park, The Elms, Highworth. SN6 7DD SU200923 – Wednesday walks, Short (Morning), usually meeting at  10:00am. and Long walks (All Day) usually meeting at 9:30am.

Meeting points and times can vary from those stated above so please check the programme carefully.

Participants walk at their own risk.

Note: By clicking on the 'red' walk OS coordinates in the walk programmes or the 'MAP' in the 'Forthcoming Walks' section of the Home Page, a link to Streetmap is opened in a separate window. This shows a red arrow indicating the nearest 'on road' point to the walk start position. Selecting “Click here to convert coordinates" will bring up other things including the nearest Post Code and Lat Long coordinates for use with Satnavs. It is important that this is done with the position arrow at the map centre. If the map is moved or panned from the initial position the coordinates will be for the centre of the map and not those of the indicating arrow. If you have moved the map simply close the window and re-enter to reset the arrow position before obtaining coordinates.

Walk Gradings

Walks are graded in five stages from Very Easy to Very Hard. This describes the terrain rather than the length.

1 Very Easy – Flat
2 Easy – Gentle Slopes
3 Moderate – Includes some Hills
4 Hard – Hard Climbs/Hills
5 Very Hard - Mountains

Going Directly to the Walk Start.
Please contact the walk leader to let them know that you are joining their walk. Although rare, walks can be changed or sometimes cancelled at short notice so contacting the leader will avoid disappointment. Also, please share mobile phone numbers with the leader.

What to Wear
Generally you should wear good walking boots or shoes and bring waterproof clothing and sufficient layers to keep warm. Club members can get a 15% discount with Cotswold Outdoor http://www.cotswoldoutdoor.com .

Other Information
Sorry these walks are not suitable for any dogs as there can be high solid stone stiles, stepping stones across streams, encounters with livestock, etc.

Prospective members are welcome to participate in a walk for a maximum of 3 times before being asked to join the Club, however, non-members are not covered by our Public Liability Insurance.

Reporting Footpath Problems
If anyone has problems with paths on a walk, please report them to the relevant walk coordinator, Jane P, Dave H or Sheila F. The relevant coordinator will then raise the problem with the relevant authority.

Footpath Walking Parties
Swindon and North East Wiltshire Ramblers are always looking for volunteers to join their Footpath Working Parties, so if you would like to help us keep the walking environment that we all use clear and usable then please contact Peter Gallagher on footpaths@ne.wiltsswindonramblers.org.uk
or Grahame Lee on gcleecplee@btinternet.com for further information.
